The Move is done. Sort of…

To explain the last week would take a novel, so in the respect of your time and mine, I will shorten this hellish week into a nutshell or at least into the size of a readable blog post.

We moved in last Sunday. I cannot begin to thank our wonderful friends enough. Ana, Troy, Pat, Carlos, Eddie, and Karl you are the best. Thank you. The actual moving went really well. We got everything in the house about eight and then went to Friday’s for some well earned dinner.

Now the settling in part is where things got wonky. We have “power” through a over-burdened, generator. We didn’t have a fridge until yesterday. We don’t have a washer or dryer. We just recently got the rest of our flooring in, although, it wasn’t the flooring promised to us by the landlord. You might think I’m being nit picky, however, we also laid down money to buy this place. So, it’s not as though we are just tenants, we are future owners. Anyway, the guy renting this place is a loser. I mean, he’s not a loser, he’s a guy out of money, out of luck and trying to pull everyone down with him.

It will all work out and I promise to keep you abreast of the latest. We have a lawyer and things will work in our favor; it’s an Astleford and a Farris, we don’t back away from a fight. ;)

So, the move is halfway there. We are all packed and tomorrow morning we will, with the help of our friends, put all of our worldly possessions into a truck and drive it to the new house. I will post pictures as soon as I have some decent ones. It’s been a long week of packing, mishaps with the deveoper, and personal frustrations, but we are almost done. Hopefully we will have all of our flooring in tomorrow, which was under question; as is electricity, hot water, and a refrigerator. I know we are getting an amazing brand new home, but I’m beginning to think it’s not worth it. :)

However, I believe the backyard for the pooches will make up for the early frustrations. I hope….

Moving to Germany

I was again watching the You Tube video of Sarah Palin’s interview with Charles Gibson. It was, in my opinion, one of the most uncomfortable and awkward interviews I’ve ever seen. Not only was she obviously parroting whatever the McCain camp told her to say, but anything that deviated off the course of her knowledge, was left to be unanswered. Instead of answering the question, she would just change the topic or answer with something that didn’t make any sense in regards to the question she was asked. I know, I know, I’m not telling you anything new, but this is one of my reasons for thinking America is no longer such a great place to live.

There is also the issue of our failing economy. I am sick of hearing reporters saying that this really isn’t a rescission, that experts say that this is just a “market flaux”. Merril Lynch just got bought out! People! They are one of the biggest firms on Wall Street, that is not a market flaux, it’s a precursor to a depression. It’s a scary to have money invested and it’s a scary time to be an American. People can’t pay their mortgages, banks can’t sell the homes, the loans go unpaid, and then powerhouses like Merril Lynch tumble.

One of the things that worried me the most this morning, AIG is now 80% owned by the US government. Does anyone see this as a problem? Our government is being forced to buy companies so our entire market doesn’t go down, but still worse, now the government owns a chunk of the biggest insurer in the world.

The main reasons I love this country are fading, and fading quickly. We don’t think it is wrong when people come and immigrant to America, what happens when people start immigrating to other countries. What happens when America is no longer a powerhouse and people want to get out just as bad as they do in Mexico, Romania, and China? Why is that such a radical thought? When your home, your future, and the future of further generations is threatened by politicians and the economy, you go where you can make a better life for yourself.

Americans are so proud when we see people from other countries taking the oath of citizenship. We want them to give up their traditions and become “American”. Well, what about the opposite? What about when Americans need to move to another country, learn another language, be made fun of because they are different, when they are the minority….? Think about it. That day is coming sooner than you think.

Germany anyone? Come on Karl, let’s go.

Drupal Camp LA

I spent this last weekend with a group of people who use a CMS called Drupal. On one hand I knew how great Drupal was, but on the other hand I had no clue of the magnitude of it’s capabilities now and in the future. However, what impressed me the most, was the community. I felt like I needed to be learning Drupal just to be a part of this amazing Open Source project. I am not only a beginner to Drupal, I’m a beginner to all things in the web development world. While being technically savvy, I am proud of myself when I get the HTML correct on my Craigslist ad or Myspace. :) You would think that a beginner would have no place at a conference like this, but I learned so much, mostly just from conversations. I went to several sessions and I now have a basic idea of what Drupal does. I think there is much to be learned just from understanding the Drupal vocab.

I would like to thank WorkHabit for the opportunity to learn so much this weekend. And also, the many people who took the time to answer my questions or just came up to me when I had an utterly confused look on my face. :)
